1973 Miles Davis Jazz at the Plaza

Posted by talesinthesun on December 8, 2008

1973-miles-davis-jazz-at-the-plazaIt seems that musicians that have very artistic music also let that flow into their covers as well.  This 1973 MIles Davis album is the release of a 1958 concert at the Plaza Hotel.  The sextet formed of : Miles Davis – trumpet; John Coltrane – tenor saxophone; Cannonball Adderley – alto saxophone; Bill Evans – piano; Paul Chambers – bass; Jimmy Cobb – drums.

The album was released on Coumbia records and a second album by Duke Ellington and his orchestra was released in 1973 as well with the same artwork.  I am currently searching for the artist and cover designer.

1970 Miles Davis Bitches Brew

Miles Davis is the next entry with his 1970 album, Bitches Brew.  I included the fold out section of the album to show both sections of the artwork by Mati Klarwein.  Klarwien did the art for a few of Miles Davis’ albums as well as Carlos Santana and many others.  He was born in Hamburg Germany in 1932 and feld to Palestine at the age of 2.  Growing up he turned into a world traveler and later studied with Salvador Dali.  His major art influences were surrealism and Timothy Leary once commented “Klarwein didnt need psychadelics” although his artwork often appeared that way.  Klarwein died at the age of 69 in 2002 with at least 30 album covers to his credit.
